David Wain: They Came Together

Don't call him a cynic. David Wain may totally tear apart the romantic comedy genre in his new film They Came Together, but he does it lovingly.

Twenty years ago, the final episode of The State aired on MTV. "I remember it was just a lot of young men screaming," David Wain says of the sketch comedy show he and his friends landed on MTV right after they graduated from NYU. The State existed on MTV when the network was still mostly music videos, and went against the grain of Saturday Night Live and other, more traditional sketch shows of the time. Wain has been subverting genres ever since, from the 2001 cult comedy Wet Hot American Summer to his latest film, They Came Together, in which Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd play with, and completely upend, every romantic comedy trope ever conceived. "The whole movie is in quotes," says Wain, who says that despite its satire, the film is more of a tribute to the 'romcom' genre.
