From the three Austin Powers movies to the two Focker films, Jay Roach has made some definite left turns. His newest, Dinner for Schmucks, starring Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, is a departure that still lines up. He connects the dots.

Roach discusses Francis Veber’s The Dinner Game, the French film on which Dinner for Schmucks was based, the dramatic role of dinner scenes, and why he feels he has to work harder than other comedy directors, having come to this genre relatively late in his career.
