Fresh Off the Boat, originally inspired by restaurateur Eddie Huang's memoir of the same title, follows the Huang family as they move from Washington, DC to Orlando, Florida in 1995. Like Huang, writer and show creator Nahnatcka Khan grew up with immigrant parents in Las Vegas and then Hawaii and knows a thing or two about balancing old and new cultures. She joined Fresh Off the Boat after working on American Dad and Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23. She talks about creating characters who behave badly but aren't bad people, plus, how she made the leap from animation to live action, and the surprising on-set definition of 'pumpkin.'
