Disaster and Diplomacy: The South Asia Quake

In Kashmir, the earthquake death toll is 30,000 to 40,000, and millions of people are homeless in torrential rain and hail that is hampering relief efforts. Pakistan and India have fought two wars over Kashmir, but the disaster has caused them to set aside their differences, at least for the moment. Will disaster aid give the United States a chance to improve its image with an important ally? Will it help ease the animosity between two enemies with nuclear weapons? Will disaster mean diplomatic opportunity for the US and for nuclear-armed enemies India and Kashmir? We get updates from reporters, relief agencies, political analysts and diplomats, including ambassadors from Pakistan and the US. Reporter's Notebook: Angels Going to Chicago, Where Are the Yankees Going? George Steinbrenner's $200 million payroll failed to deliver again last night as the Yankees lost to the Angels in Anaheim. The American League will now focuses on Chicago, where the so-called Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will play in what will be their third game in three nights in three time zones. The White Sox have been waiting. Ron Rapoport writes about sports for the Chicago Sun Times.
