The population was thought to be less than 100,000, severely threatened by disease and hunting. But more than 125,000 have been found alive and well in a remote, inaccessible region of the Republic of Congo called "the Green Abyss." Conservation Emma Stokes of the World Conservation Society calls the discovery "the mother lode of gorillas."
