Has Title IX Gender Equality Leveled Men's Sports?

In 1972, Congress passed Title IX of the Civil Rights Act to mandate gender equality in all schools that receive federal funding. One aim of the legislation was to equalize opportunities for both men and women in college athletics. Over the past 30 years, women-s participation in athletics has exploded. Now, men-s coaches are going to court over the reduction of collegiate men-s teams, including track, wrestling and crew. Has Title IX created a quota system that discriminates against men? Is the Bush administration likely to take sides? We get an update on the 30-year old battle from former athletes and athletic directors, a collegiate coach, and leaders in the sports community. Newsmaker: US Loses to Germany in World Cup Quarter-Finals It-s all over for the US, but what a difference from four years ago. Despite their defeat to the Germans in the World Cup quarter-finals, the team has turned soccer into a household word. Mark Zeigler, who-s in Asia covering the games for the San Diego Union-Tribune, praises the US for outplaying an -overrated- German team and for raising US expectations for the 2006 games. Repoter's Notebook: Hospital Trauma Centers in Israel In Jerusalem this week, two suicide bombings killed 26 people and injured 80 more. Many of the casualties, including several children, were taken to the emergency room at Hadassah Medical Hospital in Ein Kerem. Dr. Avi Rivkind, who heads the hospital-s Departments of Surgery and Trauma, says more efficient bombs are resulting in seemingly uninjured victims with massive and often fatal internal injuries.
