Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths

It's an ancient city woven into the spiritual fabric of Christians, Muslims and Jews, with archeological sites dating back over 3,000 years. Yet its rich history rests in sharp contrast to its current political and social realities, including poverty, overtaxed and overburdened residents and violence, often carried out in the name of religious freedom. The debate over whether to divide Jerusalem is itself a divisive topic sparking political and religious debates. Guest host Jim Moret weighs the political and religious issues surrounding Jerusalem and looks at the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which has at its heart a claim to the holy city, with journalists, historians, political scientists and religious leaders. Making News: Gross Domestic Product Has Best Showing in 20 Years The Commerce Department reports that consumer spending in the third quarter of 2003 was stronger than previously thought. The economy's 8.2 percent annual growth rate is its best in nearly two decades. Kathleen Madigan, business outlook editor for BusinessWeek, says the Internet, weather, vehicle incentives, tax cuts and rebate checks were largely responsible for the strong DGP. Reporter's Notebook: Security at the 2004 Athens Olympics Last month in Athens, 15 members of a local guerilla group were convicted for decades of killings and bombings. Greek officials say that, in the run up to next summer-s Olympics, their primary focus will now be on international terrorist threats. Nobody doubts they will have their hands full. Alan Abrahamson covers the Olympic movement for the Los Angeles Times.
