More Allegations of Prisoner Abuse in Iraq

Lynndie England, the "leash girl" from Abu Ghraib, has been sentenced to three years in jail. There are reports in Iraq of widespread anger than the sentence was not harsher. Meantime, as the coalition prepares to release some 1000 prisoners from Abu Ghraib as a "goodwill gesture," West Point Captain Ian Fishback of the 82nd Airborne Division becomes the latest to say that prisoner abuse is "systemic" in the United States Army. Three Republican Senators want the defense-spending bill to require observance of the Geneva conventions, but the White House threatens a veto. We look for explanations and hear more on the continuing controversy about the Geneva conventions. Making News: Congressman Tom Delay Indicted By Texas Grand Jury Republican Congressman Tom DeLay has been indicted in Texas on one count of criminal conspiracy. His lawyer calls the indictment "a dead skunk in the middle of the road." DeLay says he-ll step down temporarily as House Majority Leader, as called for by the rules of Congress, David Hawkings is Managing Editor of CQ Weekly, published by Congressional Quarterly. Reporter-s Notebook: Russia Moves against Khodorkovsky's Legal Team Robert Amsterdam is in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, after being expelled from Russia, where he was a lawyer for Mikhail Khordorkovsky. Khordorkovsky was a political opponent of Putin-s and head of the Yukos Oil Company until his assets were seized after he was convicted of fraud and tax evasion. Amsterdam, who left Russia last Friday after a visit from plainclothes police, has more on Vladimir Putin and the rule of law.
