New Orleans' Evacuation; Rehnquist's Legacy

Segment #1: Mayor Ray Nagin Orders Everyone out of New Orleans As the water level drops and contamination becomes more concentrated, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has ordered evacuation, by force if necessary, because of health concerns from contaminated floodwaters. The military says it won't take part in what it calls a "law-enforcement operation," and spokesman Eddie Compass says the New Orleans Police Department will use only minimum force to make unwilling residents leave, as they concentrate on rescue operations. Meantime, President Bush wants another $40 billion to $50 billion to provide more relief. Segment #2: The Legacy of Chief Justice William Rehnquist President Bush and retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor led final tributes today at the private funeral for the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist. Burial is to follow at Arlington National Cemetery. On Monday, the Senate Judiciary Committee will begin hearings on Judge John Roberts, a former Rehnquist clerk nominated by President Bush to succeed him. Reporter's Notebook: California Legislature Approves Same Sex Marriage The California state legislature has become the first in the country to approve same-sex marriage. While gay rights leaders call it a civil rights victory comparable to ending slavery and giving women the right to vote, Governor Schwarzenegger's office seems to be saying "not so fast." Carla Marinucci, political writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, says Schwarzenegger's decision could be crucial to his political future.
