    The Future of the Middle East

    Later this month, voters in Israel will be going to the polls to elect a new government. In addition to the elections being set against a backdrop of a possible US war with Iraq and continued violence in the occupied territories, now there is a political corruption scandal involving Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Likud party. What is the impact of this domestic issue on a possible peace plan for the region? If the Likud wins, who might join their coalition? What will all this mean to the US-Iraq situation, and whatever happened to Palestinian elections?Conan Nolan of KNBC TV guest hosts. Newsmaker: Economic Forecast for 2003 At last, there-s some good news about the economy. In its yearly economic forecasting survey, the Wall Street Journal reports that a modest economic recovery should take root in 2003. Jon Hilsenrath of the Wall Street Journal is with us to discuss that report. Reporter's Notebook: Wide Right There are lots of pressure situations in sports. A three-two count in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded, or a free throw with the game on the line in basketball. But nobody can top the psychological drama that goes with the field goal attempt in football. Mike Freeman covers the National Football League for the New York Times, where he recently wrote about what life can be like for the kicker who blows the boot.
