But the recent increase of big money appears to have led to new abuses, most conspicuously at the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. Thirty horses died there last year — a 100% increase over the previous year. The New York Times has linked those casualties to what it calls "technologically advanced gambling options" at the track's new casino.
