2 Fast 2 Drive?: Street Racing in Southern California

Last weekend's number-one box office movie proves again that fantasies about fast cars sell. But in real life, such high-speed racing takes a deadly toll on California streets and highways. This weekend, a 78 year-old San Fernando Valley man was instantly killed when his car was struck by a driver allegedly traveling 100 miles an hour in a residential neighborhood. Police say he-d just seen 2 Fast 2 Furious. Now the LA City Council has unanimously approved a law to confiscate the cars used in illegal contests they blame for terrorizing neighborhoods and killing children. Although the LAPD declined our invitation to appear on the program on the grounds that it would be advertising the movie, we do hear from a supporter of cracking down, from the insurance industry-and from a driver who says he just can-t slow down. Making News: NASA Launches Mars Rover After two days of rain-storm delays, NASA today finally launched the first of two exploratory devices designed to investigate the surface of Mars. John Callas, science manager of the Mars Exploration Rover Project at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, says the mission will reveal much about the history of Mars and provide invaluable information about the risk and challenge of space exploration.
