40 Years of Music, from the Beatles to Beyonc- and Beyond

When the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, it-s reported that crime dropped in major American cities. Only the final episode of M*A*S*H ever drew bigger TV audiences than they did. Now, consider last night-s Grammy Awards, where CBS imposed a five-minute delay in order to avert another protest like the public outcry that erupted when Janet Jackson bared her breast at last week's Super Bowl. There could be no more dramatic demonstration of how much popular music has changed in the past 40 years. Alan Light, editor- in-chief of Tracks, a magazine aimed at older music listeners, says last night's awards show covered some interesting musical ground. (This segment was originally broadcast earlier today on To the Point.) Making News: Ninth Circuit Grants Stay of Execution for Kevin Cooper Kevin Cooper, the 46-year old scheduled to be executed at 12:01 tonight will not be executed -- at least not at that time. This morning, the condemned murderer was issued a stay from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Bob Egelko, who's been following the case for the San Francisco Chronicle, says the stay turned on the possibility of fabricated evidence and procedural violations by the state.
