    Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn has appointed the former head of New York-s Police Department to be head of the LAPD. William Bratton now faces confirmation by the LA City Council. Now the New Times has been closed, with its assets sold to the LA Weekly. Arthur Spiegelman, LA bureau chief for Reuters News Service, reports on how the staff got the shocking news about the million-dollar swap that has created an alternative-press monopoly in both Los Angeles and Cleveland.
