    AZ Doesn't Like Immigrants; Does CA Still Like Democrats?

    One question raised by this weekend's Democratic Party Convention: if Jerry Brown can't do it, will the marijuana initiative bring out young voters in November?  Also, a former LA Times reporter takes an unsentimental look back at the late Daryl Gates, former chief of the LAPD. On our rebroadcast of To the Point, Barack Obama wants immigration reform, but that's a third rail on the track to November's elections. Arizona's increasingly violent traffic in guns, drugs and people has led Republicans to pass the nation's toughest crackdown.

      Daryl Gates died last week. The former LA Police Chief is being remembered as being devoted to law enforcement and the LAPD, but out of step with history. Current Chief Charlie Beck, whose father was also in the LAPD, says “there has to be a way to be an effective police officer without alienating the people you were policing.”
