    Campaign for Governor: What Will Simon Say?

    Despite a record-breaking $ 50 million, Governor Davis- reelection campaign is in big trouble. The Governor faces a massive budget deficit, memories of rolling blackouts and dismal public-opinion polls. But, Republican challenger Bill Simon has problems of his own. At a time when business is in low repute, the businessman candidate won-t even talk in detail about his own success. We look at the curious way this year-s campaign for Governor is shaping up with Dan Walters of the Sacramento Bee, Bill Bradley, former senior advisor to the California Democratic Party, and Sherri Bebitch Jeffe, political analyst for KCAL-TV and contributing editor to the Los Angeles Times. Newsmaker: Body of Abducted Samantha Runnion Found The naked body of a 5-year old girl found in the Cleveland National Forest has been identified as that of Samantha Runnion, who was abducted Monday while she was playing outside her home in Stanton. Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona says she was sexually assaulted, and that her killer will strike again. Jeff Collins is following the story for the Orange County Register. Reporter-s Notebook: Will Art Lopez Be the Next LAPD Chief? Friday is the filing deadline for applicants to replace former Police Chief Bernard Parks. In our continuing series of interviews with prospective candidates, we speak with Oxnard Police Chief Art Lopez, who served with the LAPD for 27 years before leaving for Oxnard four years ago. If he-s selected by the Police Commission and Mayor Hahn, Lopez will be the first Latino to head up the LAPD.
