Which Way, L.A.?

Cardinal Mahony and the Cathedral

The massive new Catholic Cathedral will tower over the Hollywood Freeway in downtown LA is adorned with windows of Spanish alabaster, tapestries woven in Belgium, and a marble altar from Turkey. Construction is being supervised by a man who once ministered to migrant farm workers before being appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to be Chair of California's Agricultural Labor Relations Board. Subsequently, he became Bishop, then Archbishop of America's largest Catholic archdiocese, where mass is celebrated in 38 languages for 5 million people. Cardinal Mahoney takes us on a tour of LA's Our Lady of the Angels, and talks about the role of the cathedral in medieval as well as contemporary life. Reporter's Notebook: The Death of Beatle George Harrison - "Friendly. Grouchy. Kind. Grudging. Selfless. Resentful. Materialistic. Unworldly." Not the seven Dwarves, but the headline to Mat Snow's obituary of a giant in the international music scene. The former editor of MoJo remembers George Harrison for Rock'sBackPages.com. The paradoxical Beatle died of cancer yesterday in Los Angeles at the age of 58.
