Closing Arguments for the President

The House impeachment of President Clinton was the result of "poisonous partisanship" and "distortion" in the House. By contrast, the Senate is a haven of quiet civility and wisdom, and it should throw the charges out in the interest of "constitutional stability." So argued David Kendall, the President's fourth and last attorney, after a long, meticulous, step-by-step refutation of the facts and arguments of the Republican impeachment managers. That set the state for the final presentation by Dale Bumpers, the President'' friend, who retired last year after 24 years of representing the state of Arkansas in the Senate itself.
