    Which Way, L.A.?

Consent decrees in LA gov't - better or worse?

Federal supervision has been imposed-first over the MTA, now over the LAPD. Is Los Angeles ungovernable-or are local officials simply failing to do their jobs? Some people are warning of federal takeovers. Others say the decrees just help fix specific problems. In either case, why can't LA run its own affairs? Newsmaker:There's a new runner in next year's crowded race for Mayor of LA: State Controller Kathleen Connell joins City Attorney James Hahn, Councilman Joel Wachs, Assemblyman Antonio Villaraigosa, Congressman Xavier Becerra and businessman Steve Soboroff. Reporter's Notebook: The Milken Institute says that, if peace breaks out between Israel and the Palestinians, a whole new economy is possible for the Middle East. We speak with Dr. Glenn Yago of the Milken Institute.
