Cultural Corridor

What began as a labor of love by three architects has become a massive effort to give downtown Los Angeles a grand public space. This new cultural corridor would make Bunker Hill more pedestrian-friendly, but requires destruction of municipal buildings and monumental funding. Will a park-like mall create a popular leisure destination or an expanded enclave for the cultural elite? Among those joining the discussion are architect Frank Gehry, Nicolai Ouroussof, architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times, County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, and philanthropist Eli Broad. Newsmaker: Governor Davis and Power Crisis - The Public Utilities Commission has increased electricity rates for Southern California Edison and PG&E for at least 90 days. Residents and industry will face increases of 9% to 15%. Will Gov. Davis confront the crisis in his state-of-the-state address?
