As Democrats and Republicans struggle to break a logjam on the state's $38 billion budget deficit, hundreds of thousands of signatures have been gathered and a recall vote appears likely for late this year or early next. The drive, which could also have the state-s voters electing a new governor at the same time, comes only a year after California voters re-elected Governor Gray Davis. Has bad governing brought us to this point, or is it an increasingly politicized and polarized environment? Who wins? Who loses? Guest host Sara Terry speaks with experts on California politics and advocates from both sides of the recall effort, including Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, who's contributed nearly $650,000 of his own to the effort and has made it clear he wants to take Davis- place in Sacramento. The convicted rapist was escorted through LAX, reportedly transferred by car into the custody of Ventura County authorities and taken to a state prison to begin serving a 124-year sentence. Five months ago, Luster jumped his $1 million bail while standing trial for drugging and raping three women.
