East Meets West at the Cannes Film Festival

Michael Moore may make headlines at the Cannes Film Festival, which starts today, but the real stars of the show this year are movie directors from Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand. No less than six of the eighteen films in competition are from Asia. Directors like Wong Kar-Wai, Hong Sangsoo and Takeshi Kitano have replaced the legendary French New Wave auteurs of the 1960's. What-s caused the Asian film renaissance? What does it mean for Hollywood? Chi-Hui Yang, director of the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival, says creative financing and overcoming the "subtitle barrier" are helping Asian cinema come out of the shadows.
