Evictions Begin at Lincoln Place
Sheriff's deputies descended on the Lincoln Place Apartments in Venice this morning... less than a week since tenants waited three hours to get 10 minutes of public debate at the LA City Council. Fifty-two families have been evicted by a corporate owner that's planning condos to replace low-cost apartments. It's a scenario that's being repeated in Westchester, Santa Monica, Sherman Oaks, Pasadena and West Hollywood. Tonight, are historic buildings being torn down? Are preservation ordinances being mis-used to shelter cheap housing? He founded the Crips and he's on death row for the killing of 4 people in two robberies 26 years ago. Williams denies the killings but his legal appeals have run out, and Governor Schwarzenegger will hold a clemency hearing on Thursday of this week. Williams' supporters say he's a role model because he's turned his back on gang life and urged young people to do the same. Casandra Gonzalez is a 21-year old former gang member who prepared this commentary for Youth Radio LA.
