No less than 1200 heavily armed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency conducted a coordinated raid early this morning with warrants for 88 members of the Avenues gang in Glassell Park and other neighborhoods.

The Avenues goes back to the 1950's, but this episode started with the murder of Sheriff's Deputy Juan Abel Escalante last August as he was on his way to work at the county jail.
