Governor Schwarzenegger and California's Public Employees

Three measures embraced by Governor Schwarzenegger as needed reform are not doing well in public opinion polls. At this weekend's Republican convention in Anaheim, the Governor threw his arms around a fourth measure, which does show some public approval. If the so-called -Paycheck Protection- initiative passes, members of public employee unions will have to give written consent every year if any part of their dues is spent for politics. For some months, unionized teachers, nurses and firefighters have showed up to protest the Governor's public appearances, and their unions have spent millions of dollars in critical ads on TV. Some have increased their dues especially for that purpose. We hear what that could mean for Democrats in California and hear a debate on the measure. Reporter's Notebook: Largest Whooping Cough Outbreak in 30 Years This year, Los Angeles County has seen more cases of Pertussis, or Whooping Cough, than it did in all of 2004. "Epidemic" is a panic word that health officials don't like to use, but this is the biggest outbreak since the 1970's. Laurene Mascola, Director of Acute Communicable Disease Control for the County Department of Health, has details on the spread of the disease and how you can protect your family.
