LA Archdiocese Discloses 70 Years of Sexual-Abuse Accusations

LA's Cardinal Roger Mahony said again today that apologies are not enough for the -incalculable harm- done by pedophiles in the Catholic clergy. He promised, -I will do all in my power to prevent sexual abuse by anyone serving our archdiocese now and in the future.- With that, he released a list of 244 Los Angeles priests, deacons, brothers and seminarians accused of molesting 656 minor children since 1931. The report is the latest move in a crisis of confidence in America-s largest Catholic archdiocese. Is the Church doing all it can to stop child abuse? Is celibacy the root of the problem? We hear from victims- groups and others about an unprecedented accounting. Making News: Last Chance to Register to Vote in Presidential Election California-s next election is March 2, just two weeks from today, and the registration deadline is midnight tonight. Dan Morain, who reports from Sacramento for the LA Times, looks at California's ballot items, one of which raises the ire of the Legislature and two which are close to Governor Schwarzenegger's heart. Reporter-s Notebook: Death of Centenarian Earl Hutchinson One of LA-s oldest and most distinguished senior citizens died Friday. Earl Hutchinson was 100 years old. While in his 90-s, he wrote an autobiography called, A Colored Man-s Journey through 20th Century Segregated America. President Clinton wrote a letter praising the book and its author. Hutchinson is remembered by his son, author, commentator and radio host Earl Ofari Hutchinson, Jr.
