The Army Corps of Engineers runs the Los Angeles River as a flood control channel. But speculators are buying up 11 miles of frontage between Griffith Park and downtown LA. As river restoration proceeds, Mayor Garcetti envisions a balance between upscale development and affordable housing. But environmentalists say they're losing their voice, and low-income residents fear losing their homes to gentrification. Also, what's in store for California Republicans in next week's election, and what about all those aspiring judges?

Later on To the Point, five years after President Obama ordered the closing of Guantánamo Bay, even former supporters call it a "recruiting poster for terrorists." We hear about prisoners held for 12 years without trial, videotapes of force-feedings—and the President's latest promise to veto any defense bill that doesn't allow Guantánamo to be closed.
