LACMA Names Rem Koolhaas to Design New Museum

Los Angeles is famous for wiping away its past, and that's just what cutting-edge architect Rem Koolhaas proposes to do for the County Museum of Art. His radical new design would replace most of the current buildings with what's described as "a system of horizontal layers under a tent-like roof." Museum President Andrea Rich praises the design as fiscally conservative while being architecturally radical. Nicolai Ouroussoff, architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times lauds the proposal for creating an energetic connection to the city and its culture. We speak with Rich and Ouroussoff about the art, architecture and the Pritzger Prize-winning architect's vision for Los Angeles. Reporter's Notebook: PUC President on Energy Rates and Disagreements with Governor Davis - Loretta Lynch was named president of the Public Utilities Commission by Governor Davis who is famous for micro-managing his appointees. As the energy crisis boiled over, she found herself frequently at odds with the governor. Lynch maintains that they differed only in their means to achieving a common end, and praises Davis for his efforts to coordinate government and non-governmental organizations to protect consumers.
