    When Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte died unexpectedly, the LA Unified School Board was left pretty much divided between three members backed by self-styled reformers and three supported by employee unions, including the United Teachers of LA.

    When Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte died unexpectedly, the LA Unified School Board was left pretty much divided between three members backed by self-styled reformers and three supported by employee unions, including the United Teachers of LA. Their candidate, 50-year veteran George McKenna was first in the June primary. Alex Johnson, an aide to County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, came in second. We’ll hear from both candidates. The runoff is Tuesday of next week.
