Nobel Centennial

This is the 100th anniversary of the world's most prestigious prize, the Nobel Prize. California alone has more prize-winners than any entire country, nearly 100 in all. Governor Davis has declared this Nobel Laureate Month, and the country of Sweden, which gives out the prize, is hosting celebrations in LA and San Francisco. Andreas Eckman, Consul General of Sweden recounts the creation and history of the prize, how the nomination and winner are selected, and why California's been singled out by the country that bestows the world's most prestigious awards. Newsmaker: Police Commission Approves Flexible Schedule - Despite the request by some members of the City Council to wait for a couple more weeks, the LA Police Commission has approved Mayor Jim Hahn's proposal for a flexible work schedule for the LAPD. Rick Caruso, President of the Police Commission, says the new schedule will increase public safety and morale, and decrease attrition. Reporter's Notebook: Frank Gehry to Design Washington's Corcoran Gallery Long famous for its neoclassical buildings, Washington, DC has discovered Frank Gehry, LA's most notable and notorious architect. David Levy, President of the Corcoran Gallery, says he wasn't surprised by the commission's unanimously approval of Gehry's stainless steel-clad design that he calls "an exuberant expression of American optimism."
