Only Female Fire Recruit in LAFD Resigns

Eric Garcetti has suspended the hiring process for firefighters — drastic action when the City of Los Angeles has not hired new firefighters since 2009 and a short-handed department is desperate for new personnel. But, after $20 million in payouts for race and gender discrimination, the LA Mayor says it's time to recruit a class that represents the demography of the city. Less than 3% of firefighters are women, and the lone female in the current training class has resigned; 25% of the remaining male recruits are related to firefighters already on the job. Do race and gender matter?

Later, on To the Point, Republicans have their best chance in eight years of taking over the Senate, but they just might lose their own Senate leader. We hear how the country's political future might depend on elections in some obscure states that are currently too close to call.
