    Which Way, L.A.?

    Parental Consent

    The California Supreme Court has reversed itself, throwing out a state law requiring minors to get parental consent for abortions. Pro-life groups say they'll try to recall the Justices responsible, and sponsor a statewide initiative to reinstate parental consent. Should minors' privacy rights entitle them to choose abortion? Should the judiciary be subject to political attack?

    Abigail English: Attorney and director of adolescent health care project of the National Center for Youth Law. She was part of the legal team representing plaintiffs in the American Academy of Pediatrics v. Lungren, which was just decided by the California Supreme Court. Richard Mountjoy: State Senator (R-29, Monrovia) who supported the parental consent law challenged by the American Academy of Pediatrics, et al. Therese Wilson: Spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, one of the plaintiffs in the American Academy of Pediatrics v. Lungren. Susan Carpenter McMillan: A television commentator and president of the Women's Coalition. Mike Spence: Vice president of the Board of The California Pro Life Council; board president of the West Covina Unified School District; Spence is working to put an initiative on the November '98 ballot that would reinstate parental consent, and on a campaign to unseat California Supreme Court Justices George and Chin. Emily Hodgson: Sixteen-year-old student at Santa Monica High School; she volunteers for Teen Line, a national hotline by teens for teens, that provides information and support [she-s the sister of Lucia Hodgson who was on WWLA? Stephen Barnett: Elizabeth J. Boalt Professor of Law at Boalt Hall Law School; former deputy Solicitor General. Joel Wachs: Los Angeles City Councilman representing the 2nd District (East Valley). Peter Schragg: Just retired as editor of the editorial pages of the Sacramento Bee; he wrote a column last week titled "Conflict Between the Courts and the 'Will of the People'".
