Proposition 52: Election Day Registration

Proposition 52 on Tuesday-s ballot would enhance every citizen-s right to make a difference by allowing eligible Californians to register as voters up to and including Election Day. Current law requires that they register at least 15 days before the polls open. The battle over Prop 52 has become one of the hardest fought and most emotional of this election year. Supporters claim it would expand the political process by turning around historically low voter turnouts. Opponents contend it-s full of loopholes that could be exploited by non-citizens and dishonest politicians. We hear both sides, from a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union and the California chairman of the citizens- lobby, Common Cause. Newsmaker: Mahony Loses Top Five Managers The Ventura County District Attorney today blamed LA Cardinal Roger Mahony for endangering -future victims- by his insistence on court orders before releasing evidence of -criminal-sexual abuse by priests.- This comes a day after the resignations of all five of Mahony-s top aides. Arthur Jones of the National Catholic Reporter weighs Mahony-s strategy as well as the fate of several of the archdiocese-s ministries and outreaches. Reporter's Notebook: NPR Comes West National Public Radio is spreading its wings westward with its first large-scale production center outside Washington, DC. Kevin Klose, President and CEO of NPR, credits good property values and easy access to LAX as just two of the reasons behind locating NPR West in Culver City. He considers the $13 million facility as instrumental in expanding the 32 year-old network-s West Coast coverage and reach.
