Which Way, L.A.?

Proposition A - LA Community College Funding

LA's Proposition A provides for a 1.2 billion-dollar bond that will raise property taxes to fund major renovation of the city's nine community colleges. The measure is one of the state's first bond efforts since Prop 39, which lowered the threshold for bond approval from two-thirds to 55 percent. Prop A would facilitate expansion of programs which serve high school graduates, returning education students, and those seeking English language instruction. We start with a look at the state of California's education system, then a proponent's view from the chancellor of LA's Community College District, and an opposing view from the head of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayer Association. (Kyle McKinnon guest hosts.) Newsmaker: City of Carson gets OK to split with LAUSD - The state education board has approved that Carson residents decide whether to leave the LA Unified School District to form a separate district. With the support of the city's chamber of commerce, Carson grandmother Carolyn Harris is leading the campaign to restore confidence in education and the city's capacity to serve its children. Reporter's Notebook: Life on the Rebound - Researchers have concluded that comets wiped out dinosaurs and other life forms 65 million years ago. Cal-Tech's Sujoy Mukohpadhyay says other life forms recovered rapidly as the result of diminished competition between the species. Dinosaurs, perhaps because of their size, didn't survive the impact as well.
