L.A.'s public health program is under-funded and badly organized , according to a new report. The result could be epidemics of diseases that have been controlled for decades. Meanwhile, a new mortality census show Americans are living longer than ever. Do the data hold lessons for how to live a healthier life?

Lester Breslow, MD, MPH: Professor and dean emeritus, School of Public Health, UCLA and author of a report on L.A.-s public health program released last week. The report found the program under-funded and badly organized.Mark Finucane: Director, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Jonathan Fielding, MD: Professor of Health Services and Pediatrics at UCLA's School of Public Health and Medicine and acting health officer L.A. County. [Client of REH.] Mohammad Akhter, M.D., Ph.D: Executive director, American Public Health Association, the oldest (125 years) and largest organization of public health professionals in the world. Anthony Fauci, MD: Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; chief of the laboratory of immunology. He is an internationally recognized AIDS expert. Lucy Tompkins, MD: Professor in the division of infectious diseases, and in the department of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Tompkins is also Stanford-s epidemiology director and clinical head of infectious disease services for Stanford hospital. She chaired this year-s meeting of the Infectious Diseases Society of America which wrapped up in San Francisco earlier today.
