    Riordan Slips on Republican Race for Governor

    Former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan was once a shoo-in for the Republican nomination for Governor of California. Last month, he was still comfortably ahead of both Secretary of State Bill Jones and fellow multi-millionaire businessman Bill Simon. But he is the leader no more. By Tuesday, a Los Angeles Times poll showed that Simon had pulled up even. On Wednesday, the statewide Field Poll showed Simon with a 6-point lead among likely voters in the March 5 primary election. Now, even the White House, which encouraged Riordan to run, is now making overtures to Simon. Newsmaker: Sophistication of Border Tunnel Stuns Drug Agents From time to time, drug and immigration agents have found tunnels beneath the Mexican border. But none have been as elaborate as the tunnel discovered this week in Tierra del Sol, 55 miles east of San Diego. Donald Thornhill, Jr. special agent for the US Drug Enforcement Administration, says that tons of cocaine and marijuana, and billions of dollars, may have passed through it.
