Terrorism Charges, Countercharges in Northern California

In two weeks, a Muslim imam named Muhammed Adil Khan will leave Lodi in Northern California for Pakistan, rather than fighting federal immigration charges in court. Federal officials say Kahn came to this country to establish a Madrassah, the kind of Islamic school that turns out terrorists for al Qaeda. Kahn's lawyer says, if he were really a threat, he would not be allowed to go free. Meanwhile, another imam will stand trial on immigration charges in San Francisco. The two are part of a Pakistani community in Lodi that's been shaken by accusations that some young men have been taking terrorist training. We update the legal side of the story with Stephen Maganini of the Sacramento Bee and hear from community leader Taj Khan. Making News: Dean Baquet Named Times Editor, Carroll Retires When the LA Times took heat for publishing groping stories about Arnold Schwarzenegger just before the recall election, Dean Baquet said he'd rather the paper would be respected than loved. Today, the Managing Editor was named to replace John Carroll, who's retiring from the job. Vice President and Editor Baquet discusses his hopes for the Times as well as the new challenge of competing with online news. Reporter's Notebook: Star Trek's Scotty Beams Up One Last Time "Beam me up, Scotty" entered the English language when Star Trek was a television series in the late 1960's. Scotty, the can-do chief engineer on the Starship Enterprise, operated the transporter that beamed crew-members aboard from distant planets. Today, the Canadian actor who played Scotty died at the age of 85 from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. Brian Lowry of Variety remembers James Doohan.
