Which Way, L.A.?

The Mayor and the LAPD

Los Angeles Mayor James Hahn has named a new five-person civilian commission to oversee the LAPD. The ethnically diverse slate includes a Latino, African-American, Asian and conservative Republican from the San Fernando Valley. The mayor says these independent thinkers will use leadership abilities drawn from business and law to improve department morale and public safety. Hahn joins us to talk about his nominees, the crime rate, federal consent decree, and the compressed work schedule. Newsmaker: Frank Gehry to Design Playa Vista Master Plan - Frank Gehry, who designed LA's Disney Hall and the Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum, will put his stamp on the controversial Playa Vista Development. The Pritzer Prize-winning architect, who accepted the invitation of friend-developer Rob Maguire, will wed aesthetics to functionality in creating a master plan for the office park as well as his own new office. Reporter's Notebook: Uncounted Votes in Los Angeles - As it was in Florida, so it was in Los Angeles where a sizable number of poor minority voters were disenfranchised in last year's presidential election. A study commissioned by members of Congress shows Congressional districts all over the US had problems. A full 4% of LA's votes were never counted. Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard represents East LA, downtown and other communities. Her district was hit especially hard.
