Will Quake Fault Spell Final Farewell for Belmont?

Despite explosive methane and toxic hydrogen sulfide, LA School Superintendent Roy Romer made a personal pledge to finish the Belmont Learning Center in downtown Los Angeles. What more could go wrong? Construction costs and legal bills have already made Belmont the nation-s most expensive high school, and it-s never been finished. Now, maybe it never will. The latest geologic report says that Belmont sits on an earthquake fault that runs directly under two buildings, and urges the School Board to assume that the fault is -active.- So where can thousands of kids go? We hear from school board members Genethia Hudley-Hayes and Jose Huizar, whose options are running out on a $175 million investment, and from John Orendorff, a college advisor at Belmont High School. Reporter-s Notebook: Jewish Music Lights up Chanukah Nights This week is Chanukah, and many families are following the age-old tradition of lighting candles on their menorahs and singing Jewish songs. KCRW producers Karen Radziner and Jacob Conrad spoke with owner Simon Rutberg about this integral part of Jewish cultural life.
