Big Footed by a Little Brother
San Jose is the Rodney Dangerfield of California -- it never gets any respect. That flies in the face of the fact that San Jose is the third largest city in the state and a major hub for Silicon Valley. You'd think that would be enough to give the city some significant clout. But it doesn't get the recognition it deserves -- due in large part to its imperious neighbor to the north.

But from Major League Baseball to hardball politics, San Jose continues to find itself on the wrong end of the cudgel when it comes to disputes with San Francisco. But now, in spite of objections from San Francisco officials, the state has decided to end the first leg of the bullet train in San Jose. Zócalo Public Square columnist Joe Mathews says that could be a first step toward giving San Jose the respect that it deserves.
