Zócalo's Connecting California
Bring Sanity to the Land of Nuts
Californians are nuts, according to Zócalo Public Square columnist Joe Matthews. Not unbalanced, but a just little bit zany. That's all well and good, but it means we could all use a little more sanity when it comes to public policy.
The beginning of a new year is traditionally time for taking stock of where you are -- and where you want to go. On an individual level, that can mean making all kinds of resolutions. As a group, it can take different forms. The President takes stock of where the country is in his State of the Union address; and the Governor will be doing likewise in his State of the State speech. But columnist Joe Mathews says this kind of stock-taking isn't always a rational process when it comes to the Golden State -- and he blames it in part on what he says is our inherent nuttiness.
