    Huntington Beach – Surf City USA – is paddling away from mainstream California.

    The state of California is suing Huntington Beach to force the Orange County beach town to build more affordable housing. Dozens of cities are suspected of being out of compliance with state housing laws, but in Huntington Beach the intransigence on housing is part of a bigger pattern, according to Zocalo Public Square commentator Joe Mathews. It extends to everything from immigration to marijuana. And Mathews says it’s revealing an unflattering dark side to the sunny beach city.
