There's only one Vin Scully. But Joe Mathews says the Dodgers broadcaster's graceful – and lengthy – exit from the broadcast booth should be a lesson to California, which too readily forces senior employees out of the workforce when they still have a lot to contribute.

With his skill, grace and humility, Vin Scully has been a powerful role model for generations of Angelenos. And the legendary Dodgers broadcaster continues to show the way, even in retirement. Instead of leaving the workforce at an age when most workers hang it up or get pushed out of their jobs, Scully has phased his retirement over a span of decades. Not all of us are given that choice, but Joe Mathews says it would make a lot of sense if more of us were. He says it's time to rethink the myriad rules and regulations that limit retirement options and deprive the workforce of some of its best minds.
