Zócalo's Connecting California
What the Heck Are They Saying in Silicon Valley?
Zócalo columnist Joe Mathews says Silicon Valley's tech masters have turned the Bay Area into an island, cut off from the rest of struggling California. And nothing symbolizes the divide quite like the baffling jargon that comes from the region.
Silicon Valley is famous for bringing us all kinds of things we want or think we want -- from ever-faster laptops and PC's, to smart phones and social media, and many of those gizmos help us communicate quicker — and sometimes better. But syndicated columnist Joe Mathews of Zócalo's Connecting California says when it comes to the Valley itself, its communication leaves something to be desired. The problem is a seemingly insatiable appetite for jargon and hype. Tech types no longer speak the same language as typical Californians, and Mathews says that's contributing to a growing divide between Silicon Valley and the rest of the state.
