As Aloe Blacc said during his performance on Morning Becomes Eclectic, “Music is part of who we are…it’s part of the human fabric.”

And what’s great about Aloe is that you FEEL this sentiment when you listen to his music. The MC turned soul singer credits Stones Throw label founder Peanut Butter Wolf with give him a chance to explore a new side of himself, musically-speaking, and throws out Freddie Mercury and Cat Stevens among his many influences.

Al Green is also an obvious inspiration and he weaved in a few bars from “Love and Happiness” in the middle of the first set. He also did his cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale” and well as his most well known song, “I Need a Dollar.”

Check out a great performance in the archives here

Also, in an “only at KCRW moment,” Director John Singleton happened to be walking out of an interview and was introduced to Aloe by J-Logic, who snapped a photo. John said he was looking for new music for a film he’s working on so who knows where it might lead!
