President Barack Obama’s approval ratings have sunk to a record low in California.

The Golden State has been a consistent source of support for Obama ever since he first ran for the first White House. But a new Field Poll finds that only 45 percent of voters in the state hold a favorable view of Obama’s job performance right now. That’s a five percent drop since June and the first time the president’s approval rating in the state has been below 50 percent since late 2011.

The Field Poll’s Mark DiCamillo says the trend should be especially worrisome for Obama, since the decline in voter confidence comes mostly from the president’s base, with big drops in support from liberal voters in L.A. County and the Bay Area.

The president is not on the ballot in November. But the growing disenchantment with Obama is a troubling development for Democrats in tight California Congressional races this fall.

Nationally, one recent poll put the president’s approval rating at 43 percent.
