KCRW is the radio sponsor for the Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk, which happens the second Thursday (September 9) of every month and is free and open to the public. Also, I asked Art Walk Executive Director Jay Lopez to recommend a few stops for tonight’s event.

Details and Recomendations below!

Recommendations from Jay Lopez:

Paul Chatem @ Dialect (see above)

Dialect is presenting Paul Chatem’s “River, Rock, Bones” exhibit and will be open from 5 to 11pm during the Art Walk.

Paul Chatem was born in 1974 in Bellevue, Washington, but grew up in La Crescenta on the outskirts of Los Angeles, CA. Growing up in an environment where nature, history, and the impoverished were constantly being pushed aside to make room for golf courses and mini-malls, Paul has developed a keen talent for representing the rift between rich and poor, the working man and the boss man, in his surreal, often nightmarish, narrative paintings. Work by 10 other artists will also be on display, including Jim Darling, Yellena James and Crystal Sylver.

Material @ CB1 Gallery

CB1 Gallery presents Material, a solo show of the work of Los Angeles artist, Daniel Aksten. Material continues the artist’s ongoing series of highly finished grid paintings while adding an additional body of work focusing on vertical stripes. The exhibition will be on view starting tonight through October 10, 2010.

Scrutinizing optics and the painting itself, under Southern California’s patented sunshine, Daniel Aksten forges mathematical structure, chance, and an astonishing degree of craft to produce paintings that challenge the viewer to re-examine how much one thinks they can actually see.

Best known for his fastidious paintings of geometric solids composed by chance through a system involving the roll of a die, Aksten’s Material introduces an additional form to his visual vocabulary, extending the exploration of contrast, color and reflection.

Urban Impressionism @ Crewest Gallery

Celebrated Miami-based pop and multi-media artist, sculptor and urban impressionist, Miguel Paredes, latest exhibition “Urban Impressionism: A Miguel Paredes Retrospective” is up at the Crewest Gallery. The exhibition will be open to the public on Thursday, September 9th during Downtown LA’s monthly gallery walk featuring beats by DJ Phyz Ed and complimentary FIJI Water, Roaring Lion Energy Drinks, Jarritos soft drinks and KIND Healthy Snacks from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. The artist will be in attendance.

Paredes was born in New York and is of a Latin American descent. He is an artist who combines the exhilarating sense of New York City’s graffiti art with the skill and perceptiveness of a true exceptional artist. Growing up 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Paredes exuded early signs of artistic ability and accepted an invitation to New York City’s prestigious Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art – immortalized in the musical and movie Fame – in the early 1980s. His studies at Fiorello coincided with the explosion of street culture in the city. Paredes drew inspiration from notorious pop artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and plunged into the world of graffiti and pop art taking the name “Mist” as his moniker.
