Eels Cover Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love”

Eels main man Mark Oliver Everett mostly lives in a muted space.

While he can come across as solemn if you’re being generous, he does have a sharp wit and the sort of self-deprecating humor that makes you think he’s doing it for the laughs.

Either way you slice it, he’s definitely not the kind of guy to wear salmon colored J.Crews, half rolled up the calf, enjoying a beach side stroll.

But on his recent visit to Morning Becomes Eclectic, he played a handful of brand new songs off the acclaimed new Eels album “The Cautionary Tales Of Mark Oliver Everett” as well as a few covers.

One of these was a surprisingly sweet and earnest rendition of Elvis‘ “Can’t Help Falling In Love“.

It was originally featured in the 1961 movieBlue Hawaii,was one of a trilogy of Hawaiian-based Elvis movies (good for him).

The song has since become a staple of gooey love ballads even regaining some popularity in the early 90s with a UB40 cover.

But as the session ended with this song, it was just another layer into the deep and complicated character of E. And that’s why we can’t help falling in love with him.
