KCRW DJ Mario Cotto had a chance encounter with JD Twitch at a club in Philly (more on that below) and asked him to come up with an exclusive mix for his first show of 2010, which is now available in the archives.

Twitch is one half of acclaimed DJ/Remix duo Optimo. They’ve remixed tracks by Peter, Bjorn, & John, Florence & the Machine, and Liquid Liquid, among others. AND they’ve been hosting a legendary club night in Glasgow for over a decade. Mario calls it the “the Helen of Troy of club nights” since they’ve hosted live performances by Franz Ferdinand, LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, and TV on the Radio very early in their careers.

The exclusive mix features artists on the Optimo label that exist in the space between snarly punk and ecstatic dance music. Check it out here and read the story behind the mix from Mario below:

“I had tried to see Optimo (Twitch or his Optimo partner JG Wilkes) spin on three different occasions last year to no avail. Two LA dates were ruined by circumstances and a NY date was scuttled by illness. In a completely random turn of events, I went home to Philly for a family affair and it just so happened that Twitch was spinning at a record release party that night and I took a cab there directly from the airport.

As I walk up to the club, I see him sitting on the stoop having a smoke. He was completely alone so I just walked up to him and told him that he’s my “DJ godfather” and thanked him. He was sweet and gratefully and absolutely amazed when I told him about KCRW, a radio station where DJs actually get to play whatever they want. He offered up a mix and a few weeks later he delivered. Enjoy!”
