UK band Foals took a break between Coachella weekend to come visit us in the studio. They kicked off the set with the instrumental track “Prelude” and I was taken with the precision of their guitar work. This band is tight!

I also loved that they’ve gone beyond their pure rock foundation for a track like “My Number”, which is noticeably catchier. Singer Yannis Philippakis calls it “steroid pop”.

It’s pretty undeniable. They’ve been really enjoying playing it at live shows and you can see it in their set for us.

Yannis said they really aimed to do something different on their new record “Holy Fire”, following the introverted “Total Life Forever” (written in an Oxford basement with no sunlight). To record this one, they returned to a studio they played in as teenagers. The whole band couldn’t fit in the room, so they wrote it in smaller groups. Most importantly, he said they tried not to over analyze things.

Check out another highlight, “Inhaler“, and find the full session online.
